Help with SiftVeil

Common topics below. If none of them cover it, email us — a real person reads it.

Installation

SiftVeil is currently in paid beta and the public store listing is not live yet. See the beta page for how to get access.

Once the extension is installed, pin it to your toolbar and click the icon on a supported site to enable filtering for that site.

If the extension does not appear: open chrome://extensions and check that SiftVeil is listed and enabled. Managed or enterprise browser profiles sometimes block extension installs entirely.

Signing in

You do not need an account to filter. Free local filtering works as soon as the extension is installed.

Sign in from the SiftVeil panel in your browser when you want Pro features such as preference sync. Accounts are created and used from inside the extension during the beta, so there is no separate web login to remember.

If sign-in is not working: check the email address for typos, look in your spam folder for a sign-in message, and make sure the extension is up to date. If our account infrastructure is temporarily unavailable, local filtering carries on working regardless — it does not depend on our servers.

Free vs Pro

Free covers local feed filtering, site controls, category filters, custom topics and creators, all five filter actions, locally stored preferences, and Provenance Beta where it is supported. It is not time-limited.

Pro adds preference sync, Smart Rules, advanced controls and access to future Pro features, at £3.99 a month or £34.99 a year. See the full comparison.

Filtering issues

Something got through that should have been filtered.

  1. Check that filtering is enabled for that site in the SiftVeil panel.
  2. Check that the relevant category is switched on and has an action other than Allow.
  3. Consider whether a custom topic or creator rule would express it more precisely than a broad category.
  4. If it still gets through, report it with the site name and what you expected — see Report a bug.

Something was filtered that should not have been. Loosen the action for that category — for example switch from Remove to Warn or Blur, so items stay visible while you narrow the rule down. Categories are broad by nature; a custom topic or creator rule is usually the better tool for a specific case.

Filtering is a preference tool, not a guarantee. It will not catch every item that matches your intent, and it will occasionally catch something you wanted.

Website compatibility

SiftVeil targets YouTube, Reddit, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and X. Coverage varies by site and by feature.

These platforms change their interfaces frequently and without warning, and a change can reduce or temporarily break coverage on a site. If a site that worked yesterday does not today, update the extension first, then tell us which site and which feed.

SiftVeil is an independent product and is not affiliated with any of these platforms.

Provenance Beta Beta

Provenance Beta inspects supported media locally for Content Credentials. It is best effort: where a check cannot complete or the media is unsupported, SiftVeil leaves the item alone rather than guessing.

If most items show No provenance found, that is the expected result — most media online carries no credentials, and platforms often strip metadata on upload. It is not a fault, and it does not mean the content is human-made. The full explanation, with every result state.

Subscription help

Payments are handled by Stripe. Receipts and payment confirmations come from Stripe on our behalf.

Pro features are not unlocking after paying. Make sure you are signed in to the same account you subscribed with, then sign out and back in so entitlements refresh. If it still does not unlock, email ThreadConfessions@proton.me from the address on the account.

A payment failed. Renewals may be retried, and Pro features can be suspended until payment succeeds. Updating your payment method usually resolves it.

You think you were charged in error. Email us with the date and amount — do not send card details — and we will investigate.

Cancel subscription

  1. Sign in to SiftVeil in your browser.
  2. Open the account or subscription area of the SiftVeil panel.
  3. Choose to cancel. This stops the next renewal.

You keep Pro until the end of the period you have already paid for, then the account reverts to the free plan. Your local filtering preferences stay in your browser — cancelling does not delete them.

If you cannot reach the cancellation option, email ThreadConfessions@proton.me from the address on the account and we will action it for you. See also Cancellation and Refunds in our Terms.

Report a bug

Useful reports usually contain: the site and feed, what you expected, what happened instead, the SiftVeil version, your browser and version, and whether the problem repeats after a page reload.

Finding extension errors in Chrome

  1. 1. Open chrome://extensions
  2. 2. Find SiftVeil in the list
  3. 3. Click Details
  4. 4. Open Errors, if the button is shown

Turning on Developer mode at the top right of that page makes the Errors button visible. Copy the error text into your email.

Please do not send us any of the following

Passwords, authentication tokens or session cookies, payment card numbers, or private browsing content such as direct messages and drafts. We never need them, we will not ask for them, and we would rather you did not send them. Screenshots are welcome — please crop out anything private first.

Privacy request

For access, correction, deletion or other data requests, email ThreadConfessions@proton.me. We may need to verify your identity first so that we do not disclose an account to the wrong person.

Most of what SiftVeil holds about your filtering is local to your browser, and you can remove it yourself at any time by deleting rules, clearing statistics, using SiftVeil’s reset function, or uninstalling the extension.

Your rights are set out in section 13 of the Privacy Policy.
